In this remarkable collection of essays he turns a poet's eye on his existence there and captures a life lived for the sake of survival.. For 25 years the poet John Haines lived, trapped, and hunted on the windswept hills above the Tanana River east of Fairbanks, Alaska

Snow, the trees, and the animals are records of what has happened before. From Library Journal This book is a collection of previously published essays (in Harper's magazine, among others) by poet/nature essayist Haines on life in the Alaskan wilderness. Nickum, Fish and Wildlife Reference Svce., Bethesda, Md.Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. Each of the chapters can be read as an independent essay, but Haines's pervading theme is of a wilderness that is both unchanging and changed greatly over the centuries. Recommended for general audiences.- Mary J. The book's philosophical underpinnings are much more subtle than Sam Wright's Koviashuvick: A Time and Place of Joy ( LJ 3/15/89). Haines's descriptions of the wilderness are easier to picture, and the reader feels the experience more personally.

The writing is spare and care. 0 years of homesteading in Alaska, Haines ranges from concrete subjects such as trapping to more abstract matters such as the way ice forms in a river or snow falls in the woods. There are two features that stand out. First, this is essay writing that verges on poetry. The writing is spare and care. A inspiring and thought provoking read! The Stars, The Snow, The Fire is one of the best memoirs I've read hands down. Although it really depends what your interests and viewpoints are about the environment, this is a very good book that you can sit down and get instantly hooked into. The reason behind Haines thoughts and experiences is explained in a phenomenal way and is almost addictive to read about. Haines writes many short stories combining. A Customer said deep with Jungian shadows. I just discovered John Haines, as I am planning a vacation in Alaska and I am interested in the literature and poetry that is native to AK. Mr. Haines is very deep and real, and yet he seems to be able to tap into that shadow stuff that we all carry with us. Much of what he writes is initially disturbing, yet it is so real that I found it compelling enough to keep reading. It is almost like going to a Jungia
