Still useful even with newer edition out. Aquila Chrysaetos I simply could not afford the 3 digit price tag on the new edition, so I opted for this one. Even if the family classifications have changed it is still useful. You can find out the most current info online anymore.I have some idea of how to use the keys but I am not really facile with them. I refer to this after I know what a plant is and have read other sources. This book helps me refine my ID.The most helpful feature for me is the horticultural notes. A lot of times I want to know if I can grow a particular plant in my garden. They follow the . "Not for the uninitiated" according to A Customer. This book is an excellent botanical key listing a huge number of plants. It is not your average "audubon" guide, since it requires you to key out the plant in question using botanical systematics. Definitely a good reference book, but hard to use casually to find out what that tree is in your front yard!. Excellent, but not for beginners This is an excellent book covering thousands of species of flowering plants of California. The book does contain a brief introduction to keying plants and a glossary of plant terms, but despite these features, I believe that the beginner would find this book difficult to use. It's size and complexity can be intimidating, and without color pictures (which aren't always accurate, but helpful for the beginner) it can be a frustrating experience for the novice.
