DESCRIPTION:

Greta soon recognizes her husband's affinity for feminine attire, and encourages him not only to dress like a woman, but to take on a woman's persona, as well. But in the end, this is Greta's book and David Ebershoff has done her proud. "Why don't we call you Lili?" she suggests. Yes, that was how it felt the first time: the silk was so fine and airy that it felt like a gauze--a balm-soaked gauze lying delicately on healing skin. Einar was beginning to enter a shadowy world of dreams where Anna's dress could belong to anyone, even to him. Yet Greta's love proves to be enduring if not immutable. The Danish Girl marks a promising fictional debut. Chief among these is his Californian wife, Greta, also a painter, who unwittingly sets her husband's feet on the path to transformation. The moment silk touches his skin, he is shaken: Einar could concentrate only on the silk dressing his skin, as if it were a bandage. Though the title charac

"Hard work for the reader" according to Airbreather. I wanted to like this book; the reviews looked great, and I enjoyed The 19th Wife so I know Ebershoff is a talented, intelligent writer. But I found this one a chore to get through. Here's why:I just didn't buy the characters. Surely the first person to undergo gender reassignment surgery would be someone who was brave, strong-willed, and probably a colourful personality. Lili struck me as the sort of person who simply accepts whatever life brings, without resistance; childlike and timid. Greta, as a physically striking and very wealthy American, also seemed like a square peg in a round hole. She swings back and . ChelseaGS said Book Seller and Author reviews.. While the film version falls flat, this novel is perfection.. Deeply moving and beautifully written, "The Danish Girl" allows readers to fully immerse themselves in the lives of the characters, experiencing the pain, shame and ultimate triumph experienced by Einar/ Lili. This is the rare book that I've read multiple times, unable to shake free of Lili and her process of awakening, I've found the novel more moving, more fulfilling, with each read. While the film version falls flat, do not be discouraged. This novel is perfection.
