"So much better than much of what I read in school" according to chemteach21. I know we have gotten pc to the point that we are afraid to say or even explore anything risky. That is too bad. This book by Langston Hughes is as well written and relevant as Huck Finn by Mark Twain or The Raven by Poe. Why do we not expose our children to great writings from the Harlem Renaissance? This literature is as important and a whole lot better written than The Scarlett Letter we all suffered through. Are we so scared of reexaming our views that we can't revise our antiquated curriculum? Remember when . "Do not recommend." according to Lola R Fletcher. Don't remember who the publishing company was but they apparently do not edit the books before printing -- Every word in the book that started with fi or fl, those two letters were missing & supplanted with a period (ie .ine or .ling or .nished). In addition just about every page had several words run together (ie Iwenttothe store). The underlying story was good but it was not very pleasurable trying to get through the very poor editing.. Marvin Earl Simpson said Not Without Laugher: A celebration of Life.. I liked the transition of the major characters; Sandy and Harrietta. Their struggle through adversity and their thirst for life was inspiring. Hager was rock as the family matriarch. She gave all she had for her family.I was moved to tears at the ending.
