He gives a very penetrating analysis of the place of 'spirit' within philosophy, theology, and the life of humanity. Berdyaev is a Christian personalist and existentialist, and he defines spirituality as the primal creative freedom, the reality that precedes being. When spirit is expressed concretely it tends to become 'objectified' into concepts, institutions, and social norms that end up stifling the freedom of spirit. I can't say that I agree with everything he postulates or surmises, but he does do an excellent job getting the discussion going - and deeply at that.
