The books were written in the 50s, and i thought when i went in the 80s that the people would be different, but they were as he described in the three stories of living on Corfu. The food and music were also as he described . I am collecting first editions of Durrells's books if they have any story about that time just before WWII., for my library and i have introduced his writing to many other people.. Gerald Durrell, OBE (1925 – 1995) was an English naturalist, zookeeper, conservationist, author, and television presenter. He founded what is now called the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Jersey Zoo (now Durrell Wildlife Park), but is perhaps best remembered for writing a number of books based on his life as an animal collector and enthusiast.
