Written with teachers in grades 4 through 8 in mind, Literacy in the Middle Grades has been crafted to answer the questions of teachers working with young adolescents. By addressing the realities of teaching in the middle grades — the changing needs of adolescents; the increasing diversity in the classroom; the constantly changing technology available to teachers; the newest federal, state, and curricular demands — this thoroughly applied new edition situates literacy instruction in the contemporary classroom to help new and experienced teachers help young adolescents develop strong literacy skills.

Great for Praxis preparation Rachael A. This textbook is an excellent study tool for the Praxis: Reading Across the Curriculum exam. It has definitions and ideas necessary to pass the test as well as plenty of resources for the classroom. If you have to buy this for a class, actually read through and keep it because you will need the information later on.. Not my favorite Lit book Pretty decent literacy book for the upper elementary grades. There are others that are better, but this one (and its companion "Literacy in the Early Grades") are good solid teaching tools.. Great Product! This product was very prompt in arriving. It was also in great condition. I was very happy with the textbook and with the company I bought it from!

Response from the Field… Literacy does look different with middle to upper grades students. The text does a most effective job of helping future teachers understand what literacy is and how to help students achieve literacy.Hollis Lowery-Moore, Lamar  University. The what, why, and how of a literacy program are clearly presented.Carol J. This teaches readers about the essential ingredients in a balanced reading and writing program, then it demonstrates what each piece would look like and gives a “here’s how you do it” example. Fuhler, Iowa State  University The compendium is a great feature! The way it’s referenced in the text is also good — it shows students how the various methods and strategies can play out in the actual classroom.Laura Pardo, Michigan State University  The organization of the text is excellent
