Stephen A. Rust said Be the change you wish to see. Hollywood Utopia argues that Hollywood films since at least the 1950s have been an important site for viewers to engage with environmental issues. Brereton calls our attention not only to films with obvious environmental themes like Soylent Green and Logan's Run but also to films where ecology bubbles up from beneath the surface, as in Titanic. The book is expansive and thought provoking and a lynchpin in the growing field of ecocinema studies.

Drawing on a range of philosophical theories to explore the importance of nature/landscape in film, this study shows how Hollywood uses and promotes a range of ecological ideas and debates. Films analysed include Jurassic Park, Alien, Blade Runner, The Mosquito Coast, Twister and Contact.. The author provides detailed readings of a wide number of films from the 1950s to the present day, from nature films, which explicitly foreground ecology, to more pervasive westerns, road movies and science fiction pictures
