In a world of political correctness gone crazy, there is a paranoia that her work is racist because it dares to typify races of people. Overlooked is that this is one woman's vision and an outstanding body of work created under extreme circumst. "Great story about 100+ sculpture project" according to Nora McDougall. I found a chapter from Heads and Tales in a high school literature book my great grandfather had from the 1950s. The story told how Malvina Hoffman traveled to France to study under Rodin and how he inadvertently locked her in his studio without heat for hours at their first meeting. In the end, she became his assistant, a female sculptor in a man's world.That story lead me to search Amazon for the book. I was happily surprised to find an old hardback version available from an Amazon vendor. The full story is about Malvina Hoffman's travels throughout the world to create a collection of sculptures of the different body types of . Heads and Tales Robert J. Demarest Malvina Hoffman was an incredibly talented sculptor and her book chronicles her travels searching out and sculpting racial "types" for her work for the Hall of Man at the Chicago Field Museum. She is not a great writer, but her story and interaction with the indigenous peoples she met is fascinating. Definitely a "time capsule," with many of the prejudices of the early 1930's very evident. I used it for research purposes and found it informative. The book was in "used" condition and perfect for my needs
