The settings were detailed and well described.The story takes on the complexity of slavery and the civil war. It does not show the worst of slave owners but shows that even with benevolent owners slavery is an abhorrent practice. The author did a . Excellent read I can't say enough good things about this book. It is a story of a young woman coming of age just as the civil war breaks out. Though raised in the south, she doesn't believe people should own slaves. As her fiance, friends and relatives leave to fight the war, she and the other women are left behind to try to manage without them. Their men are in danger, fighting a brutal war, without adequate supplies, food, clothes or medical care. Caroline finds a strength she didn't know she had. She finds .
