"Learning to be a Helper" according to Ms. Jo. Children love to be helpers ! Through Billy the Bullfrog, children are challenged to look around themselves and outside of themselves to see life the way it really isthere are those all around them that need some help and they can create solutions for the problems they see. Billy shows compassion and the ability to work on behalf of his new friends. Billy also received a reward: He "was one happy guy".. "Working together can make a difference in helping others and bring happiness to all." according to Lillian Rountree. Billy recognizes a need in the dried up frog, desires to be helpful, and puts his idea into action by engaging others in helping, This author and illustrator team have set the bar high with their other excellent collaberations. The setting of Billy in the pond limits them a little. Frogs digging deep enough in the desert to reach water is more of a stretch for adult readers than it will be for children.. Meeting Needs Like in Debra the Dove, Billy, the main character, sees someone in need and decides to do something about it. Instead of thinking "Hmmm, too bad," and waiting for another to help, he does himself. This is a good reminder for all of us to try to meet the needs we see, not just wish them well and hope someone else helps them.
